Many mattresses contain toxic chemicals that can affect how well you sleep. These chemicals may be from the fire retardant applied, adhesives used, or the material the mattress is made of. Sleeping on a natural mattress without toxic chemicals can help you sleep better, particularly for people who are sensitive to the chemicals used in other mattresses.
Foam and Latex Mattresses Don’t Contain Flame Retardants
Mattresses must meet Federal standards related to flammability, but how they meet these requirements is up to the manufacturer. Often manufacturers apply a variety of chemicals to the mattress to make it flame retardant and many of these chemicals are toxic. However, there are some materials that are naturally flame retardant including wool and latex. Some manufacturers use these materials to make their mattresses flame retardant with the use of fewer or no chemicals. A quality mattress store will carry a selection of non-toxic, organic latex mattresses and foam mattresses to choose from.
Use of Adhesives and Glues
Glues and adhesives are used in many mattresses to hold the layers together. There are two basic types, solvent-based adhesives and water-based adhesives. Solvent-based adhesives contain a large number of toxic chemicals which release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air and can cause breathing problems for sensitive groups. Water-based adhesives are better, but are just diluted solvent-based glues, so they still contain a variety of chemicals.
Organic Latex Mattresses Are Non-Toxic
Many people are turning to natural organic latex mattresses as the best choice for a safe, non-toxic mattress. Latex is made from raw materials harvested from rubber trees and is naturally flame resistant and hypoallergenic, which means it requires fewer or no toxic chemicals to create a latex mattress. A latex mattress topper can provide additional comfort.
